Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father's death as a Carnival barker at the age of an infant She was required to support the family working both as a maid and server. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She attended school there. She left the school after just two years of school to explore a career in acting. There were many hurdles to overcome on her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a publication about crime, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. She made ends meet with her ushering duties throughout the day, and working at night in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. The study of drama helped her to earn her degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
